1. Implement and oversee a high school guidance program that provides students with a safe and non-judgmental way to voice their concerns or worries
2. Assist school administrators and educators with planning and carrying out school-related programs and events
3. Analyze student performance in the classroom to provide guidance and identify potential problems
4. Learn students’ names, career objectives and other details so you can better serve them
5. Help students develop academic plans in accordance with their skills, talents and strengths
6. Work collaboratively with the school nurse and other supportive staff
7. Facilitate crisis intervention and prevention programs
8. Communicate with teachers, parents and administrators on an ongoing basis about behavioral and academic problems
Academic Counsellor qualifications and skills
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field
• Ph.D. in Social Services or Social Work preferred but not required
• 3+ years’ experience in a Academic Counsellor role
• Experience working with secondary students a plus
• Excellent communication and organization skills
• Ability to balance administrative and support services efficiently
